On Sunday August 29th Mandy and Nate Dahlen
hosted the season's first road rallye. Entrants began at Legion Park in West
Des Moines and followed the route instructions on a pleasant drive north
and east through Beaverdale, Saylorville, Norwoodville, the "Hilltop" area
of East Des Moines, Pleasant Hill, and past the soon-to-be Great Ape research
center before finally winding up at a lovely shelter at Easter Lake Park.
At various points on the route entrants had to stop and pick a playing card
from a deck. There was little pressure as scoring was based solely on each
car's poker hand and "fill in the blank" questions, and no timekeeping was
required. Once at the park Mandy, Nate and Connie and Lon Smallridge had
huge sandwiches, cookies, and beverages for the competitors while poker hands
were compared and fill-ins were checked. Thanks go to the Dahlen's and
Smallridge's for a great afternoon. Some photos of the post rallye gathering
and some of the participating cars can be found below. Just click on any
